More than 600 broken blade studs replaced

A broken stud may remain proud of the surface, flush or deep inside the hole. Before choosing a method, we verify access, the remaining element, hole geometry and thread protection.

Experience gained across more than 600 completed replacements has helped us develop an effective, repeatable process. Our team has designed and improved purpose-built guides and extraction tools selected for the fracture and connection conditions.

After extraction, the connection is inspected and cleaned before the correct replacement is installed to project documentation. Additional findings are documented and agreed before work continues.

Purpose-built tooling for controlled broken-stud extraction.

Northon has replaced more than 600 broken studs securing wind-turbine blades to the hub. This field experience has helped us refine a controlled, repeatable process covering damage identification, extraction, thread inspection and preparation for the replacement fastener.

For this work, our team has designed and developed purpose-built guides and extraction tools. Tooling is selected for fracture depth, access and seat condition to maintain axial guidance, protect the thread and minimise intervention in the blade-to-hub connection.

Blade stud replacement scope

Each case is assessed individually; not every broken stud requires the same drilling, extraction or thread-restoration method.

  • fracture-position and accessible-length assessment
  • blade, hub and adjacent-fastener protection
  • centred preparation of the remaining fastener
  • controlled extraction or removal
  • thread and face cleaning and inspection
  • replacement-stud installation and final check

Replacement studs are installed to the documentation applicable to the project.

Before installation, the prepared seat, replacement component and requirements for seating, tightening and connection security are checked. Work parameters come from turbine-manufacturer documentation or the agreed repair procedure.

After installation, the connection is inspected, witness marks are applied and photographic records are prepared. Acceptance scope is matched to the number of replaced studs and project requirements.

How is a broken blade stud replaced?

The process covers blade and hub securing, access preparation, use of selected axial-guidance tooling, controlled fragment extraction, thread inspection and cleaning, correct stud installation and result documentation.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Record fracture position, condition and access.

  2. 02

    Extraction

Remove the stud remainder while protecting thread alignment.

  3. 03

    Inspection

Check thread cleanliness and suitability for the replacement part.

  4. 04

    Installation

Install the new stud and complete the required final checks.

What the customer receives

  • damaged-stud location and identification
  • before-and-after photographs
  • thread and seat assessment
  • replacement installation confirmation

What determines the extraction method?

Break depth, material, diameter, thread condition, axial tool access and manufacturer requirements all matter. One extraction method is not suitable for every case.

Damage to the thread, hole or adjacent components requires a separate technical assessment before the repair continues.

What determines scope and cost?

Scope depends on the number and position of damaged studs, access, thread condition and required tooling.

  • turbine and blade model
  • break position relative to the surface
  • number of damaged studs
  • photos and inspection results
  • condition of adjacent connection elements
  • site and requested date

Blade stud replacement across Europe

Northon repairs blade-to-hub connections in Poland and other European countries. Turbine configuration, parts, tooling and safe access are confirmed before mobilisation.

Information needed to assess a broken stud

Photographs and basic turbine data help define access and tooling. The final method depends on the condition found on site.

  • manufacturer and turbine model
  • blade or position identification
  • photo of the break
  • approximate break depth
  • number of studs
  • available manufacturer procedure

Frequently asked questions

What experience does Northon have in broken blade stud replacement?

Northon has replaced more than 600 broken blade-root studs. It is one of our specialist service areas, supported by purpose-built guides, extraction tools and methods refined in the field.

What does broken blade stud replacement involve?

Securing the connection, controlled fragment removal, thread inspection and installation of a new element to documentation.

Is one method used for every broken stud?

No. The method depends on break depth, access, thread condition and connection design.

Is the thread inspected?

Yes. The accessible thread is assessed and prepared before installation. Additional damage is documented.

Can several studs be replaced during one mobilisation?

Yes, where the approved scope, parts and connection-safety requirements allow it.

Which photographs are needed?

A close-up of the break, the whole connection, turbine identification and a view showing access.

Is the repair documented?

Yes. The agreed record may include photographs, completed work and replaced-element identification.

Is the service available outside Poland?

Yes. Northon carries out turbine repairs in Poland and other European countries.
