A blade inspection establishes the actual condition of the surface, leading and trailing edges, tip, joint areas and visible lightning-protection components. A systematic review helps distinguish minor coating defects from indications that call for closer diagnostics or service intervention.

The scope follows the turbine type, operating history, previous reports and the purpose of the assignment. It may be a periodic inspection, post-work acceptance, verification of a specific indication or a survey after an operational event. Every finding is tied to an unambiguous location and photographic evidence.

What indications do we identify?

We assess visible signs of surface and structural degradation, measure their extent and assign a blade location. Classification and action priority follow the agreed reporting standard and project requirements.

  • leading-edge erosion, coating wear and gelcoat or topcoat loss

01 / DIRECT ACCESS

Rope access and platforms

Direct access enables close visual examination, measurement of defect length and width, tactile surface checks and repeatable scale photographs. It is particularly valuable when detailed classification or repair-scope preparation is required.

02 / AERIAL IMAGING

Drone-assisted inspections

A drone can efficiently capture imagery of the complete blade without direct technician access to the surface. Blade zones are recorded in a structured sequence, after which the images are reviewed, findings located and areas requiring close-up verification selected. Standard RGB imagery documents visible surface changes and does not replace examination for hidden subsurface defects.

    We establish the objective, turbine type, blade identification, required classification standard and available records from earlier inspections.

    Rope access, platform, drone or an agreed combination is selected for site conditions and operational constraints.

    Surfaces and characteristic zones are examined in a defined root-to-tip sequence using consistent image identification.

    The location, orientation and dimensions of each indication are recorded and placed on a blade map.

Measurement conditions matter

Inspection quality depends on visibility, lighting, surface cleanliness, platform stability and weather. Drone imagery also depends on distance, viewing angle and capture consistency. For thermography, ambient parameters and the operating state of the tested system are recorded to avoid treating reflections, solar loading or natural surface variation as a fault.

Reporting that supports service decisions

Results are organised so the client can compare blade condition, establish priorities and plan the next inspection or repair. The report structure can follow the operator's, wind-farm owner's or project-specific template.

Wind turbine blade inspection FAQ

Which blade inspection method is best?

The method follows the objective. A drone is effective for efficient full-surface imaging, while rope access or a platform enables close measurement and more detailed assessment. A planned combination often provides the most useful result.

Does a drone inspection replace rope access?

Not in every case. A drone can identify and document many surface changes, but it does not provide surface contact or direct measurements at the defect. Ambiguous or significant indications may require close-up verification.

What does the inspection report contain?

The report includes turbine and blade identification, method and inspection conditions, images, finding location and description, measurements or scale, agreed classification and a recommendation for the next action.

When can anti-icing-system thermography be performed?

The survey is planned when sufficient thermal contrast and system-state control can be achieved. Weather, sunlight, wind, blade surface and camera geometry all affect the result, so conditions and interpretation limits are assessed for every assignment.
