COATING & CORROSION

Wind turbine corrosion protection

Northon assesses, repairs and restores protective coating systems on steel wind-turbine components. Surface preparation, coating layers and application conditions are selected to manufacturer documentation and the approved coating specification.

Coating repair starts with substrate and environment assessment

Corrosion may occur on the tower, platforms, nacelle structures, connections and other steel components. Before repair, we determine damage extent, old-coating edge condition and available preparation method.

The repair system must follow project requirements. Environmental conditions and process times are controlled and the completed area documented. ISO 12944 may provide context but does not replace the manufacturer specification.

Coating repair scope

Work may cover internal and external tower surfaces, nacelle elements, frames, brackets and auxiliary steel structures.

  • identification of blistering, flaking, under-film corrosion and rust
  • cleaning, degreasing and mechanical surface preparation
  • feathering of the existing sound coating
  • primer, intermediate and topcoat application
  • temperature, humidity and dew-point control
  • visual and dry-film-thickness checks where specified

How is a corrosion-protection repair performed?

The process covers assessment and marking, removal of loose corrosion products and weakened coating, substrate preparation, application of agreed layers and final inspection records.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Define damage type, area and surrounding coating condition.

  2. 02

    Preparation

Remove loose coating and corrosion and prepare the transition.

  3. 03

    Application

Apply specified layers under controlled conditions.

  4. 04

    Acceptance

Check continuity, appearance, area and required coating parameters.

What the customer receives

  • repair-location map or description
  • before-and-after documentation
  • coating-system and batch identification
  • specified quality-control results

When should a wind-turbine coating be repaired?

Local rust, blistering, flaking, mechanical damage, exposed steel or edge failure may require attention. Priority depends on location and deterioration.

Not every discolouration represents the same damage. Assessment should reflect substrate, previous coating system, environment and owner requirements.

What determines coating-repair scope?

Scope and cost depend on area, location, preparation requirement, coating system, access and weather.

  • damage location and area
  • existing coating type
  • required repair system
  • surface preparation method
  • access and containment
  • quality-control requirements

Wind-turbine coating repair across Europe

Northon carries out local coating repairs in Poland and Europe. Work method and weather window are agreed for the location, surface and coating-system requirements.

Information needed for a corrosion-protection quotation

Overview and close-up photographs with scale help assess the work. Information about the existing coating and required repair system is also needed.

  • turbine model and component location
  • overview and close-up photographs
  • approximate area
  • coating or colour specification
  • required preparation method
  • schedule and access

Frequently asked questions

Which turbine components can be protected?

Steel tower, nacelle, platform, bracket and other components may be included where documentation and access allow.

Does the repair include surface preparation?

Yes. Method and degree depend on substrate condition and coating specification.

Is ISO 12944 used?

It may provide technical context, while final requirements come from manufacturer and project documentation.

Does weather affect the work?

Yes. Temperature, humidity, dew point and containment affect coating preparation and application.

How is the repair documented?

Records may include photographs, preparation, materials, application conditions and inspection result.

Which photos should be sent?

The complete component, close-ups, a scale reference and information about position and access.

Does Northon work outside Poland?

Yes. Mobile teams deliver projects in Poland and other European countries.
