Yaw brake disc repair without dismantling the turbine

We repaired a yaw system brake disc without dismantling the turbine or removing the disc. The task required a purpose-built method and tools designed for the extremely limited working space.

The Northon team completed a technically demanding repair of a wind turbine yaw brake disc. The entire process was carried out with the component still installed, allowing the turbine to remain assembled.

Yaw brake disc repair without removal

The main challenge was the extremely limited working space. Standard tools could not fit into the area requiring machining, and completing the repair without disassembly had been considered unfeasible.

A purpose-built method and dedicated tools

We developed our own working method and prepared a dedicated tool set tailored to the available space. This made it possible to complete every machining stage without removing the component being repaired.

Scope of work

  • milling the damaged yaw brake disc surface
  • installing steel repair plates
  • milling the plates to the required final thickness
  • dimensional inspection of the repaired surface

Precision machining in a confined space

The project demonstrates how team experience, careful technical preparation and tools designed for a specific task can solve a problem without time-consuming disassembly. We completed the work with the required machining precision and final inspection.
